Artisan Stories

A space to honour the hands that hold our heritage. These are stories shaped in stone yards and studio corners, where patience meets precision and tradition meets touch. Through portraits, textures, and timeworn tools, we trace the human imprint behind every vessel. This is not just about how something is made. It is about who makes it, and what it means to them.

The
Process

A visual ode to the makers behind the craft — this series captures the intimate, often unseen moments where hands bring ideas to life. Through close portraits and raw textures, it celebrates the beauty of creation, labor, and human touch.

01

Block Procurement

The journey begins deep within the earth, where raw marble and stone are quarried with care. Block procurement is a practice rooted in instinct and experience; selecting each slab not just for its appearance, but for its integrity. Our artisans work closely with quarries across India to source the finest blocks, balancing grain, density, and natural character. No two blocks are alike; each bears its own veining, mood, and memory. This is where the story of each basin begins: not in a factory, but on a mountainside. And it’s here that nature offers its first contribution to design.

02

Block Cutting

Once selected, the marble block arrives at our workshop—a monolith waiting to be transformed. Using precision cutting equipment and carefully calibrated measurements, the stone is divided into manageable blocks tailored to the dimensions of the intended basin. This stage demands a careful balance, too swift a cut risks fracture, too slow and the rhythm is lost. Our craftsmen guide each cut with practised attention, ensuring natural veining is respected, proportions are preserved, and material integrity remains intact. What results is a series of precisely cut blocks, each one holding the potential of form, awaiting the next chapter in its transformation.

03

Block Shaping

Once the blocks are cut, the shaping process begins. Using a hybrid approach of machinery and artisan-led tools, the stone is measured and carved into its foundational silhouette. This phase is all about proportion and intention, where the roughness of the block yields to a design-led rhythm, and the basin’s basic geometry begins to quietly take hold.

04

Rounding The Vessel

The vessel begins to breathe as its interior is carefully rounded. This stage demands both patience and precision. Artisans use grinders and hand-guided tools to hollow the form with exacting care, ensuring symmetry, depth, and fluidity. Slowly, the raw stone transforms into a vessel, one that will hold water, presence, and quiet rituals for years to come.

05

Intricate Details

Beyond form lies finesse. This stage is where basin edges are bevelled, joints are refined, and design elements, grooves, lips, or sculptural flourishes, are introduced. It is a moment of artistry, where the artisan’s eye meets the designer’s vision. Each line is honed not just for beauty, but for balance, inviting light and shadow to dance across the surface.

06

Polishing And Finishing

The final touch is a return to stillness. Through a sequence of sanding, polishing, and hand-buffing, the stone’s true character is revealed. Matte or glossy, every finish is tailored to the basin’s intent. This step seals the story, preserving the basin’s natural essence while elevating it into a piece of functional sculpture, ready to be lived with.
